ARGENTINA
Buenos Aires, Argentina
1981. First mission for Bell Telephone. Repair primary PCM equipment used by the local telecom company. Beside weapon manufacturing, a number of civilian equipment was also made; railway rolling stock. The transmission equipment was like to keep control of telecoms.
The country was still in the grip of the "Junta". Curfews were in place. However Buenos Aires was a lively place. Mission lasted 6 months.
Chile
Santiago De Chile, Chile
1989. Implementation of small order primary Subscriber PCM equipment to replace an aging radio equipment. Functioning as a line extender.
Short classroom training in Spanish.
Santiago is on the edge of the mountain range and prone to earthquakes. I experienced one slight shake.
COLOMBIA
Bogota, Colombia
1983. Repair of primary trunk PCM with line repeaters.
Colombia at that time was not yet known for it's drug related activities. A bigger problem at that time was Kidnap-for-ransom.
1988. Subscriber PCM equipment for Baranquilla Gran Abastos. Acting as subscriber line extenders to improve phone and fax service.
MEXICO
Mexico City, Mexico
1988. Assisting INDETEL with troubleshooting Primary PCM installations and FDM testing in local factory and onsite installations in various cities.
INDETEL was a subsidiary of ALCATEL at that time.
Mexico City was the base of the operations. A big city surrounded by mountains. The smog at some times was dangerously high; sparrows falling from the sky, kids had to stay at home.
